Hillfort. The views down into the Marshwood Vale and Devon in the distance are simply stunning. But you have to concentrate on the road, as you descend steeply to Askerswell Village Hall.
Take your time over the next section. Very undulating and very rural. Ascending hidden gorges, passing flower laden verges, visiting tranquil villages, with a different view round each corner, this stage needs savouring. You may find the cosmopolitan Southern Counties Lodge Café, which caters for Go Carters & Clay Pigeon shooters, a bit of a culture shock.
After lunch, you descend into the Blackmoor Vale. Not quite so hilly, but very rural. Eventually you depart this Vale up an exposed ascent to Bulbarrow. If it gets too steep, stop and admire the view towards the Mendips. Then it’s down hill all the way to Ansty .
All over; don’t believe it! The route takes you down more backwaters and bluebell woods, until you crest the final rise to see Dorchester down below. Savour the ride up the High Street, knowing that you’ve conquered the “Dorset Downs”!
Dorset Downs medals will be on sale at the Finish

Welcome to the 23rd Dorset Downs 100km “Populaire” Randonnee event, organised under AUDAX UK rules. CTC Wessex invite you to experience some of the best cycling lanes in Wessex.
The route takes you through some strenuous terrain, with steep ascents and descents, and you will encounter fords, which may be slippery. Take care when cycling with other cyclists; keep your distance, especially down the hills. Although physically challenging, the time allowed to complete the course should enable most reasonably fit cyclists to finish. Take your time, and enjoy the scenery.
Starting in Top O Town carpark (reasonably priced parking and good Cyclist’s Café), you soon pass Poundbury Hill Fort on your right, and Prince Charles’ New Poundbury on your left. Up and down the switchback hills, you cross and recross the ancient Roman Aqueduct, built to supply Dorchester with water. A quick hop south, and you join the Roman Road, ending up at Eggardon
